BEEPS: Telomeres as a molecular individual quality marker in the Sociable weaver

Speakers: Sophie Dupont

I’m delighted to present the first results of my current post-doctoral position conducted between the CEFE (Montpellier, France) and the CiBIO (Vairao, Portugal) in collaboration with the DEPE. Here, I studied for the first time in male sociable weavers (Philetairus socius) whether early-adult telomere length and dynamics are linked to global survival probability. To do so, I measured relative telomere length at 1- and 3-years-old (i.e., before vs after reaching sexual maturity) for 162 males from a long-term monitored population at the Benfontein Reserve (Kimberley, South Africa). By coupling telomere characteristics and Bayesian capture-recapture data within the hidden Markov model framework, I was interested about how telomeres length and changes over two years relate to global survival, considering detailed individual life-history. During this BEEPs seminar, I’m also describing the burning research issue I will develop based on the laboratory work I’m achieving during my ongoing 3-months mission at the DEPE.
