The Nuclear Physics European Collaboration Committee (NuPECC) [1] hosted by the Euro-pean Science Foundation represents today a large nuclear physics community from twenty threecountries, three ESFRI (European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures) nuclear physics in-frastructures and ECT* (European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and RelatedAreas), as well as from four associated members and ten observers. One of the major objectivesof the Committee is: » …on a regular basis, the Committee shall organise a consultation of thecommunity leading to the definition and publication of a Long Range Plan (LRP) of Europeannuclear physics. » .To this aim, NuPECC launched the preparation for the new LRP in May 2022 [2]. The bottom-up approach to the LRP, was strengthened by launching an open call for input. The received 159contributions, submitted by more than 400 individual scientists, collaborations, research infrastruc-tures, and institutions in Europe composed a solid basis for the further analysis and elaboration ofthe LRP by 11 Thematic Working Groups (TWG). The TWG covered a large set of topics relevantto the development of nuclear physics namely, Hadron Physics Properties of Strongly InteractingMatter at Extreme Conditions of Temperature and Baryon Number Density, Nuclear Structureand Reaction Dynamics, Nuclear Astrophysics, Symmetries and Fundamental Interactions, Ap-plications and Societal Benefits, Research Infrastructures, Nuclear Physics Tools – Detectors andExperimental Techniques, Nuclear Physics Tools – Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, andQuantum Computing, Open Science and Data and Nuclear Science – People and Society.Two working meetings were held at GSI/FAIR in Darmstadt, Germany in October 2023 andin February 2024. The purpose of the first meeting was to draft the LRP recommendations, andthe second meeting was dedicated to finalizing the LRP chapters. A draft of the full LRP2024was presented and discussed with the nuclear physics community at a dedicated three-day TownMeeting in Bucharest, Romania in April 2024. BEEPS: Global change : Causal climate drivers, physiological responses and consequences for population viability of ectotherms a case study: the common lizard, Lacerta vivipara
Speakers: Sandrine Meylan Climate change should lead to massive loss of biodiversity in most taxa, but the detailed physiological mechanisms underlying population extinction remain largely elusive so far. Moreover, identifying the early warning signals of catastrophic extinctions become a central focus for ecologists. In vertebrates, baseline levels of hormones such as glucocorticoids (GCs) may be indicators of population state as their secretion to chronic stress can impair survival and reproduction. However, the relationship between GC secretion, climate change and population extinction risk remains unclear. But Telomere length (TL) represents also a promising molecular tool, since telomere attrition is associated with aging processes and accelerates after a recurrent exposure to environmental stressors. In the southern margin of their range, populations of the common lizard (Zootoca vivipara) recently became extinct at lowest elevations due to changes in climate conditions. However, the proximal signals involved in these demographic declines are still unknown. Using two complementay approaches in natural and controlled conditions, we investigated whether climate conditions alter physiological responses and mediate reproductive trade-offs in viviparous populations of the common lizard (Zootoca vivipara). https://indico.in2p3.fr/event/34031/
